The Aga Khan Rural Support Program in Northern Pakistan: In August 1990, Dr. Noorallah Juma, Soil Ecologist at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada had the unique opportunity to visit the Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP) in Northern Areas of Pakistan. During the first phase of the visit, he went to the Gupis and Sher Khilla villages in the Gupis valley of the Northern Areas of Pakistan and took a large number of slides that demostrated the magnitude of challenges for sustainable development of this region. The AKRSP emphasizes wealth generation by increasing primary production through training, outreach, and infrastructure development. Other facets of the program address issues such as health, education, economic development, diversification, and women's workload. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a private, non-denominational, development network established by His Highness The Aga Khan. It seeks sustainable solutions to long-term problems of poverty, with special emphasis on the needs of rural communities in mountainous and other resource-poor areas. The Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRSP) was established in the Northern Areas of Pakistan in 1983. The program is multidimensional, community based, participatory and innovative that reinforces civil society and respects local culture. In 1990, it was in its eighteenth year and at that time it had made a significant difference in lives of more than 150,000 households. Primary production can be achieved in regions where there is adequate solar energy, good quality water and fertile soils. The Northern Areas have adequate sunshile to grow crops, vegetables and trees if the residents can overcome the limitations of water supply and shortage of arable land. Pedosphere.com is pleasd to present two slideshows portraying major development challenges that were being boldly faced by AKRSP in 1990. Enjoy and learn about problems and solutions!
